The Sacred Basin: A Fortress by Nature / 聖なる盆地：自然が作った要塞
Iga is a unique basin surrounded by steep mountains on all four sides. In ancient Japanese thought, such deep mountain areas were considered “sacred lands” where people could hide from the world. This complex topography made it extremely difficult for outside rulers to grasp the internal situation, allowing the local residents to protect their secrets for centuries. The deep valleys and misty peaks were not just home to warriors, but to the very essence of ‘Invisibility’.
伊賀は四方を険しい山々に囲まれた、類まれな盆地です。古来、日本の思想において、こうした山の奥深くは人々が世俗から逃れ隠れる「聖地」とされてきました。この複雑な地形は、外部の統治者が内部の状況を把握することを極めて困難にし、住民たちが数世紀にわたって秘密を守り抜くことを可能にしました。深い谷と霧に包まれた山頂は、単なる戦士の住処ではなく、「隠密」の本質そのものを育んだのです。

While Iga was geographically isolated, it was strategically close to the ancient capitals—only 70km from Kyoto and 40km from Nara. This location allowed the Iga-shu to quickly acquire the latest technology, religious culture (such as Shugendo), and most importantly, political intelligence. They were not primitive mountain dwellers; they were sophisticated information brokers who utilized their proximity to the center of power to stay ahead of their rivals.

Because the authority of central governors (Shugo) was weak in this difficult terrain, the local land-owning samurai (Jizamurai) formed a unique self-governing body. They occupied central temples like Heiraku-ji (now the site of Iga Ueno Castle) and governed through a democratic-like alliance. This independence from a single feudal lord is what allowed them to develop their skills as specialized mercenaries and intelligence experts, selling their services to the highest bidder with professional pride.
