A Town Built for Defense / 防衛のために設計された城下町
Visiting Iga Ueno is more than a tourist trip; it is a step into a tactical masterpiece. When the ‘Castle Master’ Todo Takatora renovated Iga Ueno Castle, he didn’t just build walls; he redesigned the entire city for war. The town is divided into ‘Machi’ (for merchants) and ‘Cho’ (for samurai). The streets were laid out in a grid pattern with strategic temples placed at the edges to act as auxiliary fortresses during an invasion.
伊賀上野を訪れることは、単なる観光ではなく、戦術的な傑作に足を踏み入れることを意味します。「築城の名手」藤堂高虎が伊賀上野城を改修した際、彼は単に壁を作っただけでなく、都市全体を戦争のために設計し直しました。町は「マチ（町人地）」と「チョウ（武家地）」に分けられ、碁盤目状の街路の端には有事の際に要塞となるよう寺院が配置されました。
The Tallest Walls and Hidden Temples / 日本有数の高石垣と隠れた寺院
The highlight of the pilgrimage is the 30-meter-high stone walls of Iga Ueno Castle. Built to prevent infiltration, they remain some of the tallest in Japan. Nearby, you can visit the Ueno Tenjin-gu Shrine, the spiritual center of the town. These sites, combined with the remaining samurai residences (Bukeyashiki), allow visitors to experience the atmosphere of the ‘Hizo-no-kuni’ (Treasured Land) where the professional Iga-mono once lived and served.
巡礼のハイライトは、伊賀上野城の30メートルを誇る高石垣です。潜入を防ぐために築かれたその高さは日本有数です。近くには城下町の惣社である上野天神宮もあり、武家屋敷の遺構とともに、プロの伊賀者がかつて暮らし、仕えた「秘蔵の国」の空気感を今に伝えています。歴史の断片が今も街の随所に息づいているのです。
