Samurai or Ninja? The Hanzo Identity / 侍か忍者か？服部半蔵の正体
In pop culture, Hattori Hanzo is the ultimate ninja. In historical reality, he was a samurai—a high-ranking vassal of the Tokugawa clan. However, his family originated from the Iga province. His father, Hattori Yasunaga, was an Iga-born warrior who served the Matsudaira (Tokugawa) family. Because of these roots, Hanzo had a deep connection with the Iga and Koga shinobi, acting as a bridge between the Shogun and the shadow warriors.
ポップカルチャーにおいて、服部半蔵は最強の忍者として描かれます。しかし歴史的な実像は、徳川氏に仕えた「武士」です。ただし、彼の家系は伊賀国にルーツを持っていました。父・服部保長は徳川家に仕えた伊賀出身の武士でした。このルーツがあったからこそ、半蔵は伊賀・甲賀の忍びと深い繋がりを持ち、将軍と影の戦士たちを繋ぐ架け橋としての役割を果たすことができたのです。
The General of the Shadows / 影を率いる将軍
Hanzo’s most famous achievement was the ‘Shinkun Iga-goe’ in 1582. He coordinated the Iga and Koga groups to protect Ieyasu during his life-threatening escape. For this loyalty, the Ieyasu entrusted the Hanzo family with the guard of the western gate of Edo Castle—the ‘Hanzo-mon.’ Under his command, 200 Iga-mono and 200 Koga-mono were organized into a formal military unit. Hanzo wasn’t just a fighter; he was a ‘Shinobi Commander’ who managed the most secret military assets of the Shogunate.
半蔵の最も有名な功績は、1582年の「神君伊賀越え」です。彼は家康の絶体絶命の逃避行の際、伊賀・甲賀の集団を調整して護衛にあたらせました。この忠節により、家康は江戸城の西門（半蔵門）の警護を半蔵に託しました。彼の指揮下で200名の伊賀者と200名の甲賀者が正式な軍事組織として編成されました。半蔵は単なる戦士ではなく、幕府の最高機密である軍事資産を管理する「忍びの司令官」だったのです。
