The Transition to Peace / 平和な時代の「忍び」の変容
As the Sengoku period ended and the peaceful Edo period began, the role of the Shinobi changed drastically. In the Todo clan of Iga, the title “Shinobi-no-shu” was formally changed to “Igamono” in 1645. They were no longer mysterious warriors hiding in the mountains; they became official ‘Samurai-rank’ civil servants. Their mission shifted from ‘taking castles’ to ‘maintaining the peace’ of the administration.
戦国時代が終わり平和な江戸時代が始まると、忍びの役割は劇的に変化しました。藤堂藩では1645年、それまでの「忍びの衆」という呼称が「伊賀者（いがもの）」という役職名に改められました。彼らはもはや山に隠れる謎の戦士ではなく、正式な「武士」身分の公務員となったのです。彼らの任務は「城を取ること」から、政権の「平和を維持すること」へと移り変わりました。
Guardians and Recorders / 城門の番人と記録の達人
One of the primary daily jobs for the Edo Igamono was serving as ‘Gatekeepers’ at the castle’s rear gates. They didn’t just stand guard; they were meticulous ‘Recorders.’ They kept detailed logs of every person and item that entered or left the castle, including the exact time, the number of people, and the quantity of goods. This high-level information management was a direct application of their historical intelligence-gathering skills—precision and observation were their new weapons.
江戸の伊賀者の主な日常業務の一つは、城の裏門での「門番」でした。しかし、単に立っていたわけではありません。彼らは極めて精密な「記録係」でもありました。城に出入りするすべての人や物資を、時刻、人数、数量に至るまで詳細に記録しました。この高度な情報管理能力は、かつての諜報活動で培われた技術を直接応用したものであり、「正確さ」と「観察眼」が彼らの新しい武器となったのです。
