During the peaceful Edo period, the Igamono served as low-to-middle ranking samurai. While they received a stable rice stipend from their lord, it was often not enough to support a large family. To supplement their income, many Iga families turned to ‘Naishoku’ (side jobs). Interestingly, they used their specialized skills for commerce—for example, producing and selling high-quality ink, umbrellas, or traditional medicine (Iga-goe-yaku). This entrepreneurial spirit ensured their survival even when there were no wars to fight.
平和な江戸時代、伊賀者は中下級の武士として仕えていました。主君から安定した禄高（米）を得ていたものの、大家族を養うには不十分なことも多く、多くの伊賀者の家では「内職」が行われていました。興味深いことに、彼らは専門的な技能を商業に活かしました。高品質な墨や傘の製造、あるいは伊賀越薬などの伝統薬の販売です。この起業家精神が、戦いのない時代でも彼らの生存を支えました。
The Cost of Readiness / 「備え」の維持費
A Shinobi’s budget also had to account for the maintenance of their equipment. High-quality blades, specialized tools, and the ingredients for gunpowder and medicine were expensive. They viewed these not as luxury items, but as essential ‘capital investments’ for their professional duties. Their financial reality was a careful balance between being a humble civil servant and maintaining the readiness of an elite intelligence operative.
忍びの家計には、装備の維持費も計上されていました。良質な刀剣、特殊な道具、火薬や薬の材料などは高価でした。彼らはこれらを贅沢品ではなく、プロとしての任務を果たすための「設備投資」と考えていました。彼らの経済的実態は、慎ましい公務員としての生活と、エリート諜報員としての即応能力の維持との、絶妙なバランスの上に成り立っていたのです。
