Silence the Guard Dogs: Inu-kai-no-jutsu / 番犬を黙らせる「犬飼の術」
One of the greatest obstacles to infiltration was the guard dog. Shinobi developed ‘Inu-kai-no-jutsu’—not to harm the animals, but to neutralize them. They would carry ‘poisoned’ meat that caused temporary sleep or used specific scents to mask their own human smell. Some accounts even suggest they would befriending local dogs over weeks before a mission. By understanding animal psychology, the Shinobi turned a castle’s best security system into a silent witness.
潜入の最大の障害の一つが番犬でした。忍びは「犬飼の術」を編み出しましたが、それは動物を傷つけるためではなく、無効化するためでした。一時的な眠りを誘う餌を与えたり、特殊な匂いを使って人間特有の臭いを消したりしました。中には、任務の数週間前から地元の犬と仲良くなっておくという記録もあります。動物心理を理解することで、忍びは城の最強の警備システムを沈黙させたのです。
Horseback Intelligence / 隠密の騎馬術
While often seen running on foot, Shinobi were also skilled in ‘Dakyu’ (traditional polo-like training) and horseback riding for rapid information delivery. They used specialized gear to muffle the sound of horse hooves, such as wrapping the hooves in cloth or straw. This allowed them to travel long distances at high speeds without alerting enemy outposts. For a Shinobi, an animal was not just a tool, but a strategic partner in the shadow war.
忍者は走っているイメージが強いですが、迅速な情報伝達のために騎馬術にも長けていました。馬の蹄（ひづめ）の音を消すために布や藁を巻くといった特殊な工夫を凝らし、敵の検問に気づかれることなく高速で長距離を移動しました。忍びにとって動物は単なる道具ではなく、影の戦争における戦略的パートナーだったのです。
