The Kanto region was dominated by the Hojo clan, protected by the fearsome Fuma-itto (Fuma clan). Led by the legendary Fuma Kotaro—described in chronicles as a giant with terrifying features—this group specialized in ‘Rappa’ (disruption) and naval sabotage. They utilized the complex coastline of Sagami Bay and the dense forests of Hakone to launch devastating night raids against the Uesugi and Takeda clans, using fire and confusion as their primary weapons.

The Fuma were unique for their strong connection to naval warfare. They operated high-speed boats to harass enemy supply lines along the coast. However, with the fall of Odawara Castle in 1590, the Fuma clan lost their patron and vanished into the shadows of history. Some say they became urban brigands in the developing city of Edo, while others believe they integrated into the local villages, taking their secrets to the grave. The mystery of the Fuma remains one of the most captivating chapters of Kanto’s history.
風魔の最大の特徴は、水軍との強い結びつきにありました。高速の小舟を操り、海岸沿いの敵の補給線を脅かしました。しかし、1590年の小田原城陥落とともに風魔一党は後ろ盾を失い、歴史の表舞台から消え去りました。ある者は江戸の町で盗賊集団になったと言われ、ある者は地元の村々に紛れ込み、その秘術を墓場まで持っていったと言われています。風魔の謎は、今なお関東史の最も魅力的な一章です。
