The Fusion of Faith and Firepower /
In the Kii province (Wakayama), the Negoro-shu represented a unique fusion of Buddhist monks and elite warriors. While famous for their mastery of the matchlock rifle (Tanegashima), they also possessed sophisticated infiltration and intelligence skills similar to the Iga ninja. They viewed the manufacture of gunpowder and firearms as a sacred science, making them one of the most technologically advanced military groups in Sengoku Japan.
Enemies of the Unifiers /
Because of their independent power and advanced weaponry, the Negoro-shu became a major threat to Oda Nobunaga and later Toyotomi Hideyoshi. In 1585, Hideyoshi launched a massive campaign to destroy the Negoro stronghold. Many survivors fled and were eventually recruited by Tokugawa Ieyasu, bringing their expertise in firearms and ‘Sengoku psychology’ to the Shogunate’s elite guard. Their influence lived on in the development of Japanese military science and the professionalization of the ‘Shinobi’ role.
