Uesugi Kenshin, the legendary ‘God of War’ of Echigo (Niigata), commanded a specialized intelligence group called the ‘Noki-zaru’ (Eaves-Apes). Their name reflected their incredible climbing skills and ability to peer under the eaves of enemy buildings. Kenshin, who valued ‘Gi’ (Justice) above all, relied on the Noki-zaru to provide accurate, unbiased information so he could make tactical decisions based on truth rather than rumors. They were the silent architects of his legendary victories at Kawanakajima.
越後（新潟）の「軍神」上杉謙信は、「軒猿（のきざる）」と呼ばれる特殊諜報集団を率いていました。その名は、彼らの驚異的な登攀（とうはん）技術と、敵軍の屋根の軒下から覗き見る能力に由来します。「義」を重んじた謙信は、噂ではなく真実に基づいた戦術判断を下すため、軒猿がもたらす正確で偏りのない情報を頼りにしていました。彼らは、川中島の戦いにおける伝説的な勝利の影の立役者だったのです。

The Noki-zaru were masters of high-altitude mountain warfare. Operating in the snowy peaks of Shinano and Echigo, they developed specialized footwear and breathing techniques to maintain speed in thin air and deep snow. Unlike the flashy ninja of fiction, the Noki-zaru were rugged survivalists who could vanish into the mist of the mountains in seconds. Their existence proves that Ninjutsu was not a single tradition, but a collection of regional techniques adapted perfectly to the local environment.
軒猿は、高地における山岳戦の達人でもありました。信濃や越後の雪深い峰々で活動するために、薄い空気や深雪の中でもスピードを維持できる特殊な履物や呼吸法を編み出しました。フィクションの派手な忍者とは異なり、軒猿は数秒で山の霧の中に消えることができる、無骨なサバイバリストでした。彼らの存在は、忍術が単一の伝統ではなく、地域の環境に完璧に適応した多様な技術の集合体であったことを証明しています。
