Reading Time in a Cat’s Eye / 猫の目で時間を読む「猫目術」
In an era without wristwatches, a Shinobi needed a reliable way to tell time during long infiltrations. They used ‘Neko-me-no-jutsu’—the art of reading time through the shape of a cat’s pupils. Since a cat’s pupils change predictably based on the intensity of sunlight, a Shinobi could estimate the hour by observing the narrowness of the slit. This allowed them to coordinate night raids with perfect timing, using nature as their precision instrument.
腕時計のない時代、長時間の潜入を行う忍びにとって正確な時刻を知ることは不可欠でした。そこで彼らは「猫目術（ねこめじゅつ）」を活用しました。猫の瞳孔が太陽光の強さに応じて変化する性質を利用し、その形の変化から時刻を推測したのです。自然を精密機械として利用することで、彼らは夜討ちのタイミングを完璧に合わせることができました。
Internalizing the Biological Clock / 身体に刻む時間感覚
Beyond cats, Shinobi trained their own biological clocks. Through breathing techniques and meditative practices, they could count seconds and minutes with extreme accuracy even in total darkness. This ‘internal chronobiology’ ensured that if multiple teams were infiltrating a castle from different directions, they could strike simultaneously without a single sound or signal. Their timing was their ultimate weapon.
猫に頼るだけでなく、忍びは自らの体内時計も鍛え上げました。呼吸法や瞑想を通じて、漆黒の闇の中でも秒や分を極めて正確に数えることができました。この「体内時計」の精度により、複数のチームが別々の方向から城に潜入しても、合図なしに同時に攻撃を仕掛けることが可能だったのです。タイミングこそが、彼らの究極の武器でした。
