Infiltrating the Black Ships / 黒船への潜入任務
When Commodore Perry’s ‘Black Ships’ arrived in 1853, the Tokugawa Shogunate turned to its oldest intelligence asset: the Shinobi. Sawamura Jinzaburo, an Iga-descendant shinobi, was ordered to infiltrate the American ships. It is said he secretly boarded a vessel to gather intelligence on the foreigners’ equipment and intentions. This was one of the last recorded ‘active’ missions for a traditional shinobi, bridging the gap between the samurai era and the modern world.
1853年にペリーの「黒船」が来航した際、徳川幕府は最古の諜報資産である「忍び」に頼りました。伊賀者の末裔である沢村甚三郎は、アメリカの軍艦への潜入を命じられました。彼は密かに船に乗り込み、異国人の装備や意図を探ったと伝えられています。これは伝統的な忍びによる「現役」任務として記録された最後期のものの一つであり、侍の時代と近代の架け橋となるエピソードです。
From Spies to Police Officers / 隠密から警察官・警察機構へ
As the Edo period collapsed, many Igamono and Kogamono transitioned into roles within the new Meiji government’s police and security forces. Their skills in observation, tracking, and information management were perfectly suited for modern law enforcement. The ‘Ninja’ didn’t disappear; they evolved. The DNA of their intelligence methods continues to live on in the foundations of Japan’s modern security and intelligence agencies.
江戸幕府が崩壊すると、多くの伊賀者・甲賀者は明治新政府の警察や警備組織へと身を転じました。観察、追跡、情報管理のスキルは、近代的な法執行機関に完璧に適合していました。「忍者」は消え去ったのではなく、進化したのです。彼らの諜報技術のDNAは、日本の近代的な警備・諜報機関の基礎の中に今も生き続けています。
