Oda Nobunaga’s son, Nobukatsu, attempted to conquer Iga in 1579 without his father’s permission. He led an army of 8,000, expecting an easy victory. However, the Iga-shu utilized the complex terrain to their advantage, launching fierce guerrilla attacks and night raids. The Oda forces, unfamiliar with such ‘irregular warfare,’ were utterly defeated and forced to retreat in shame. This victory proved to the world that the Iga-shu were masters of their land.

Nobunaga’s Wrath: 40,000 vs. 10,000 / 信長の怒り：4万対1万の激突
Infuriated by the defeat, Oda Nobunaga himself led a massive invasion in 1581 with 40,000 troops, surrounding Iga from six directions. The Iga-shu, totaling only about 10,000, fought desperately. They used temples as fortresses and utilized infiltration tactics to confuse the enemy. This was not just a battle of numbers; it was a clash between the ‘total war’ of a rising hegemon and the ‘specialized defense’ of a secret society.

Despite their bravery, the Iga-shu were eventually overwhelmed. Many temples were burned, and the independent ‘Iga Republic’ was crushed. However, the shinobi did not disappear. Many escaped to other provinces, and their reputation for resilience and skill only grew. Their techniques were codified into manuals like the “Bansenshukai” to ensure their wisdom would never die. From the ashes of defeat, the ‘Ninja legend’ truly began to spread across Japan.
勇戦空しく、伊賀衆は最終的に圧倒されました。多くの寺院が焼かれ、独立した「伊賀惣国」は崩壊しました。しかし、忍びたちは消え去りませんでした。多くが他国へ逃れ、その回復力と技術の評判はさらに高まりました。彼らの技術は『萬川集海』などの伝書として体系化され、その知恵が絶えることはありませんでした。敗北の灰の中から、現在に続く「忍者伝説」が真に日本中へと広まり始めたのです。
