The origins of both Iga and Koga ninja are deeply rooted in Shugendo (mountain asceticism). Yamabushi, the mountain hermits, were the primary source of ‘secret knowledge’ for the Shinobi. Through rigorous training in the sacred mountains of Iga and Shiga, they mastered the arts of survival, herbal medicine, and psychology. The Ninja didn’t just learn to fight; they inherited a spiritual and scientific legacy from the mountains.

Yamabushi traveled freely across Japan’s borders, even when military restrictions were tight. By maintaining close ties with these ascetics, Iga and Koga ninja gained access to a nationwide intelligence highway. In our analysis, this relationship is the ‘Strategic Infrastructure’ that allowed Ninjutsu to evolve beyond simple combat into a sophisticated system of statecraft and survival.
