A Shinobi did not just ‘wear a costume’; they ‘inhabited a role.’ The technique of “Shichifakata-de” defined seven primary social roles: 1. Komuso (flute-playing monks), 2. Shukke (priests), 3. Yamabushi (mountain ascetics), 4. Sosetsu (merchants), 5. Sarugaku (entertainers), 6. Tsune-no-kata (ordinary locals), and 7. Hokashi (street performers). By mastering the specific language, walk, and knowledge of these professions, a Shinobi could bypass any checkpoint.
