The iconic all-black suit is largely a creation of theater and film. In reality, pure black creates a noticeable silhouette even on moonlit nights. According to the ninjutsu manual “Shoninki,” preferred colors were dark navy, brown, or persimmon. These colors blend naturally into the darkness of the countryside and the shadows of buildings.
全身黒タイツのような「黒装束」は、主に演劇や映画によって作られたイメージです。実際には、真っ黒は月夜などではかえってシルエットが目立ってしまいます。忍術伝書『正忍記』によれば、紺色、茶色、柿色などが推奨されていました。これらの色は、農村の闇や建物の影に最も自然に紛れ込むことができる実用的な色だったのです。
The Seven Disguises (Shichifakata-de) / 変装術の極致「七方出」
When traveling for long-distance intelligence gathering, Shinobi transformed into seven distinct personas to avoid suspicion. These included: 1. Monks (Komuso), 2. Shinto priests, 3. Mountain ascetics (Yamabushi), 4. Merchants, 5. Entertainers (Sarugaku), 6. Commoners, and 7. Masterless samurai. By mastering the speech and manners of these professions, they could cross borders freely.
遠方への情報収集（遠士）の際、忍びは疑いを避けるために「七方出（しちほうで）」と呼ばれる7つの姿に変装しました。1.虚無僧、2.出家、3.山伏、4.商人、5.放れ座頭（芸人）、6.常の形（一般人）、7.侍。それぞれの職業の言葉遣いや作法を完璧にマスターすることで、関所を自由に通り抜けることができたのです。
Practical Gear for Survival / 生き残るための実用的な工夫
Their outfits were modified farming clothes, designed for mobility and protection. They used ‘Tekko’ (arm guards) and ‘Kyahan’ (leg guards) to protect against insects and thorns. On cold nights, they even stuffed washi paper inside their clothes for insulation—a simple but effective survival technique from the manuals.
