What Is a Ninja, Really?
The word ninja is recognized worldwide, but the historical Japanese term is shinobi. Real shinobi were not supernatural assassins. They were specialists in intelligence, infiltration, survival, and strategy during Japan’s Sengoku period.
Much of the modern ninja image comes from theater, film, and anime. Historical ninja blended into society and relied on information rather than spectacle.
