What Is a Ninja, Really?

The word ninja is recognized worldwide.
But in Japan, the historical term is Shinobi — and the difference matters.

Shinobi were not simply assassins or acrobatic warriors.
They were specialists in information, survival, and strategy.

During Japan’s Sengoku period (15th–17th century), shinobi served powerful warlords
as spies, scouts, and intelligence agents. Their greatest weapon was not a blade —
it was knowledge.

The image of ninja in black uniforms, leaping across rooftops, comes largely from
theater, film, and anime. The real shinobi looked like ordinary people — because
that was the point.
